Preparing & Storing

STORING CHESTNUTS:
Storing ChestnutsTo keep your chestnuts fresh, refrigerate them in a ventilated bag as soon as possible, treat them as a vegetable and keep your nuts in the crisper section of your refrigerator.

Chestnuts should have a rich brown outer shell. To test freshness, shake them, if they are getting old, the nut inside will rattle and the outer shell color will start to get dark.

PREPARING CHESTNUTS:
Before you begin: cut a large X on the flat side of the nut. Cut all the way through the shell but try not not penetrate the nut itself. If you don't cut an X into the nut, it will likely explode when it begins to heat.

Roasting Nuts:  Place on a cookie sheet in the oven @ 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Cool slightly, peel the shell while still warm, eat and enjoy.
Boiling Nuts:
Place nuts in a pot of boiling water, boil for approximately 15-20 minutes or until tender. Cool slightly, peel the shell while still warm, eat and enjoy.
Microwave Nuts:
Place nuts in microwave safe dish with a little water, cover and cook for 2-3 minutes. Cool slightly, peel the shell while still warm, eat and enjoy.
